ASOA is the largest center of scientific researches in fuel-energetic and chemico-technological fields of industry having not only republican, but also world significance. 1109 scientific and pedagogical collaborators of 56 departments, 18 problematic labs and 2 scientific-research institutes including 91 professors and doctors of sciences, 651 assoc. prof. and candidates of sciences take part in scientific-researches carrying out.          ASOA played great role in technical thoughts development in Azerbaijan and in scientific-technical intelligence educating (training). For its success the institute was twice awarded with order of the Red Banner of labour.
         At the initial stage of the institute existence scientific researches had been carried out without any planning and coordination. Only in 1934 when scientific research sector (SRS) was set up at the institute scientific researches planned development and attempt of scientific forces amalgamation began to function. A bit more than 2 years later SRS had about 200 permanent members of staff and total number of scientific workers-teachers was 350.
         Among the basic work in scientific-research field which had been carried out in those years organic chemistry laboratory work in the field of oil product constituent research and oil for the aim of individuals or groups extraction for transferring them into more valuable substances must be mentioned; oil product polymerization study with rubber-like substances formation, organic synthesis realization on Baki oil refinery product base with the aim to gain valuable chemical combinations from hydrocarbons (so as a-oxides, chlorhydrines, glycol and hydroxy amines from amilen fraction of oil pyrolys product), substance solution in dissolved state study carried out by inorganic chemistry laboratory, hydraulic study and viscous fluids transport, making modern pumps for transferring black mineral oil and mud must be mentioned as well.
         Pre-war years were the important period in scientific base development and in strengthening scientific researches at the institute when scientific research sector grew and became stronger represented well harmonious mechanism, arranging and coordinating activity of laboratories, departments and so on. All this was resulted with sharp increase of carried out scientific-research work volume. For comparison it must be mentioned that if since 1920/21 academic year from the day of institute foundation and up to 1936/37 academic year total sum of means mastered on scientific-research work on state budget and economic subjects was only 600000 roubles but just in 1938 it was 500000 roubles, in 1939 it was 700000 roubles and for 9 months in 1940 it reached up to 900000 roubles.
         During the Great Patriotic war outcoming from country's demand SRS subject volume grew intensively: in 1941 it made up 1377800 roubles, in 1942 it was 1260600 roubles and in 1943 it was 1605700 roubles.
         Among the leading activities at developments directed on aviation petrol and oil production increase on researching substitutes of deficit materials out of local raw material must be mentioned. Out of economic subject work carried out by SRS in 1942the following can be separated compressor exploitation mastering in the field 26 Baki Commissars of trust "Turkmenneft", west Nebitdag exploitation wells examination (research) and their mastering plan making up.
         In post-war years scientific directions in drilling field and oil fields exploitation, power engineering, economics, manufacturing processes automation, mechanics and so on appeared.
         For the purpose of high school capabilities comprehensive using, new organizational forms contributing success of development began to be created: :problematic and field scientific-research laboratories. So in 1957/58 academic year 2 problematic scientific-research laboratories have been founded: on automation and engineering cybernetics (1957) and polymers and monomers chemistry (1958).
         In 1961 according to the of council of the Ministers of the Republic problematic scientific-research work department with sectors geology, drilling and oil and gas fields development, chemistry and oil refinery, automatics, power engineering and information-measure technique was founded.
         Some times later problematic laboratories have been founded: on catalysts development for rendering harmless wasted gases of internal-combustion engines (1964) and mathematical methods; and complex manufacturing processes automation system in the oil and chemistry industries (1964). On the given stuff and resources base at the institute in the PSRWD composition next laboratories have been founded: geologo-geophysical, over-deep drilling technology, oil and gas, plastic oil and gas production technique and technology, catalysts development of making exhaust gases ICE (internal combusion engine) harmless, technological processes automation in oil refinery industry, marine water use in the industry, power engineering of the oil industry and automated electro drive, thermodynamics of hydrocarbons and formation physics (in 1972 it was renamed in "hydrocarbon, thermo physics problematic laboratory"), corrosion control, oil hydraulics. Further problematic scientific-research laboratories network enlarged up to 29 units (ones) out of 11 ones base scientific research institute "Geotechnological problems of oil, gas and chemistry" was founded.
         In whole in 60-s in scientific-researches fulfillment carried out by the institute 1630 collaborators of the institute took part including 9 academicians and corresponding members of Azerbaijan Republic Academy of Sciences, 30 professors, doctors of sciences and 145 candidates of sciences, assos. professors.
         Carried out scientific-research work volume under the treaty with ministries and industrial enterprises from 1960 up to 1970 made up 9.363.000 rubles.
         Scientific activity at the institute was constructed and coordinated in correspondence with more important directions (spheres) of country and republic national economy development. So the institute took part in carrying out 5 target complex programs affirmed by the GKNT and the USSR State Plan orders, 6 all-union scientific-technical programs of the USSR Academy of Sciences and 5 Azerbaijan SSR Academy of Sciences, 7 programs of branch plans and main work plans of the Ministry of High Educational institute of Azerbaijan SSR.
         For the years of its existence ASOA has brought considerable contribution to country's oil, gas and oil refinery industry development by its scientists and graduates. Many ideas, developments, techniques and methods have been firstly investigated and used in the world and home practice for oil gas fields searching, exploration and exploitation.
         Thus among the work of pioneer significance it could be mentioned turbine drilling making, contribution to directional oil and gas wells drilling theory and practice, theoretical and practical basis of wells exploitation by sucker-rod pumps and compressors methods, gas injection into the formation for oil recovery increase firstly planned in ASOA and tested in PO (PU) "Azneft", theoretical and practical basis development and gas-condensate fields exploitation, making up development project of unique gas condensate oil field "Karadag", before unknown phenomenon study-initial pressure gradient generation while gas and gas condensate fields development recording of which is necessary for gas and condensate recovery formation increase, oil field development theory and practice development containing non-newtonian oil, their transport and non-newtonian systems use in oil production, off-shore oil-gas fields development theoretical basis creation, methodical manual on off-shore oil, gas and gas condensate fields analysis and projecting affirmed by the USSR Ministry of the Gas Industry, principally new catalysis for such processes as oxidizing hydrocarbons dehydrogeneration, partial olefins, alcohol's and hydrogen sulphide oxidation, nuclear magnetic logging work (NML), a number of NML apparatus modifications development which are successfully used in Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tatarian, Western Siberia oil fields, turbine rotation rate control study (investigation) while Kola over - deep well ST-3 drilling, automated compensation alternating-current devices work general theory creation.
         Scientific-research results carried out by the institute scientists are awarded by the USSR State premium and by 4 Azerbaijan SSR premiums in science and technique sphere, Azerbaijan SSR State premium for the firstly published text-book in Azerbaijan, by 2 premiums of the USSR Council Ministers, by 4 premiums after I.M.Gubkin, by 2 premiums of the USSR Ministry of Education for the best scientific-research work.
         ASOA scientific-technical developments have been exposed at 15 international and over 50 all-union and republican exhibitions and have been awarded by 6 golden, 41 silver and 70 bronze medals and 13 honourable diplomas as well.
         Modern scientific level, novelty and practical value of results of scientific-research work carried out at the Oil Academy are characterized by successful invention and patient-license activity testing scientific developments in different spheres of the industry and highly qualified stuff training activity (doctors and candidates of sciences) as well. Thus for 80 years of its existence 1300 patents for inventions have been received by Oil Academy . Scientific-research work volume for all these years is about 140 million roubles (1921-1992) and 3,48 milliard manat (1993-1999).
